Dry Days

Go to the Beach

One of the best things about Cornwall is the huge amount of beaches to choose from – our favourite is Daymer Bay (lots of rock pools) but we are tied to beaches that allow dogs. Others include Rock and Polzeath on
the North Coast and Porthluney Cove at Caerhays Castle on the South Coast. There is a map and book in the Games Room with descriptions of all the beaches in Cornwall on it so have a look at them for other options.
Rock and Padstow -25 mins drive (1/2day)
One of our favourite family days is to go to Rock and have a walk on the beach and then take the ferry across to Pastow for Fish and Chips at Rick Steins Fish and Chip shop or even just a wander around and an ice cream.

Porfell Animal Land- from the Lostwithitiel/Dobwalls Road follow signs – 20 mins drive (2/3 hours)

This is our favourite – we have been going with the boys since they were tiny – it is a small sanctuary withlemurs, monkeys, zebras, meercats etc a small farm and children’s play area. It is charming and is run by a lovely couple who do everything themselves and rescue animals from all over the country.

Newquay Zoo, Newquay – 25mins drive (2-3hours)

This is a lovely small zoo which is very well done and perfect for small children. There is a good café for lunch but otherwise a great place is.The Lodge, Pentire Road, Newquay- greatfood, beautiful views and very child friendly.

Fowey– 20 mins (2 hours+)

We love this beautiful little fishing village – take a boat ride up the river passed Daphne du Maurier’s house for about 45 min s or a ferry over to Polruan on the other side ofthe river. Lots of nice places to eat.

Bike Ride, Camel Trail, Bodmin or Wadebridge – 20 mins (as long as you like)

The Camel Trail runs for miles. If you have your own bikes then start at Bodmin but you can get on at Wadebridge where there are loads of Bike hire shops (details in this file). Most popular is to ride from Wadebridge to Padstow and back. Easy to hire equipment to accommodate toddlers.

Cardinham Woods– 5 mins (as long as you like)

We love Cardinham woods – miles of forest trails and the terrain is perfect for buggies, small children and bike riding. There is a children’s play area and café as well as lots of barbeques. It is very pretty pace to go for a picnic and a paddle in the river. Turn left out of the drive and head down the hill for about 1 ½ miles signed to the right before the sharp bend.

Wet Days

National Marine Aquarium – Plymouth – 45mins drive (1/2day)

Tip for lunch – leave the aquarium and cross the bridge into the harbour where you will find lots of restaurants – we usually go to The Pasta bar which does delicious homemade pizzas and pasta (in short supply in Cornwall!)

Kids Kingdom, Colliford Lake – 20mins drive (2 hours+)

This is a big indoor play area up at Colliford Lake – on a dry day there are things so do outside too

Newquay Aquarium, Newquay – 25 mins drive (1-2hours)

Much smaller than the Plymouth aquarium but
great for toddlers – a great place for lunch is The Lodge, Pentire Road, Newquay- great food, beautiful views and very child friendly.

Bens Playworld, St Austell – 25 mins drive (2 hours+)

Another large indoor play area – very close to Charlestown which is a lovely fishing village with Tall Ships a couple of good places to eat, beach and Shipwreck and Heritage Museum.
